Shell and tube heat exchangers are devices used to exchange heat between two media. They consist of a casing in which a bundle of pipes is placed. The bundle of pipes inside the heat exchanger can have a straight or spiral shape. Most often, the medium that gives off heat passes in a tube bundle, and the medium that receives heat in the casing. Heat exchange between the two media in it occurs through the walls of the inner tube or tubes of the inner beam. The large tube-casing at the same time serves as a basis of the external case of such heat exchanger.

By spatial orientation shell-and-tube heat exchangers can be:
  • vertical - more compact in area, work effectively with steam and gas environments, including as condensers, as the vertical orientation facilitates the removal of condensate;
  • horizontal - work more efficiently with liquid media, with horizontal orientation it is easier to implement structures of very large dimensions and thermal capacity.
The design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers is first of all characterized by very high flexibility and ability to adapt to the most various technological or production conditions, needs and processes.
There is a possible:
